Digital Valve Controllers with HART® Communication Protocol

FIELDVUE™ DVC6200 and DVC2000 digital valve controllers are HART® communication instruments approved for non-incendive, intrinsic safety, flameproof and explosion proof applications. Digital valve controllers work on single- or double-acting actuators. FIELDVUE digital valve controllers provide online valve diagnostics and are a core part of the Emerson PlantWeb™ digital plant architecture.

FIELDVUE™ DVC2000 digital valve controllers are HART® communicating, microprocessor-based current-to-pneumatic instruments. Using technologies and experience learned from the DVC6000 product line, new features and capabilities have been added to address additional application needs including:

  • Linkage-less, non-contact valve position feedback system
  • Local user interface including a LCD and pushbuttons for navigation
  • 7-language support
  • Automatic tuning
  • 2 Integrated limit switches (1 mA or 4 mA output for open or closed indication)
  • Integrated valve position transmitter (4-20mA output)
  • NAMUR mounting
  • Compact size for small valves and tight spaces

These features and capabilities were developed to support a global customer base that requires a simple, easy to use, digital valve controller. Most striking is the patented non-contact, linkage-less valve position feedback system. With no touching parts, the feedback system capitalizes on magnetic technology while improving instrument reliability on linear or rotary valves. Configuration of the DVC2000 is simple with the full text, multilingual local user interface. English, German, Italian, Spanish, French, Chinese and Japanese languages are supported in every device.

Truly capitalizing on the power of digital technology, the DVC2000 also supports the unique Performance Diagnostics (PD) capability of FIELDVUE instruments. While the control valve is operating, critical valve performance information is available to evaluate and make decisions regarding the health of the entire control valve assembly. Information is communicated to the appropriate personnel via a red-yellow-green snapshot and is further supported with recommendations on how to correct any identified problems.

FIELDVUE™ DVC6200 digital valve controllers are HART® communicating, microprocessor-based current-to-pneumatic instruments with linkage-less, non-contact travel feedback. Three important functions are performed by the DVC6200 instrument:

  • Traditional positioning of a control valve by converting the 4-20mA DC input signal from the process controller to a pneumatic output signal to the actuator.
  • Automatic calibration and configuration utilizing the power of microprocessor technology.
  • Communication capability via the HART communications protocol to provide instrument and valve diagnostic information.

This instrument provides one platform for any pneumatic actuator application. The DVC6200 can be installed on sliding-stem, rotary, single- or double-acting actuators.

Designed for ruggedness and easy maintenance, the DVC6200 is modular. The single master module can be removed from the instrument housing without disconnecting the field wiring, pneumatic connections, or stem linkages. This master module contains the critical sub-modules so component removal is quick and simple.

The operation of many industrial processes involves inherent risk. Instrumented protection systems are specifically designed to reduce the severity of the impact of an emergency event. These systems, such as Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS), are designed to monitor a process for potentially dangerous conditions. During an emergency event, the SIS instrument activates the valve to move the process to a safe state.

What happens if the valve does not move when an emergency event occurs? Personnel safety, equipment damage, and environmental protection could be at serious risk.

Traditionally, a pneumatic test panel located near the valve provides a means to exercise the valve to ensure operation when called upon. However, the procedures to test the valves are labor-intensive, cumbersome, and may require the valve to be locked in a fixed position or bypassed.

FIELDVUE™ digital valve controllers installed on emergency shutdown valves offer state-of-the-art testing methods. Using HART® communication, the 375 Field Communicator or ValveLink™ Software replace the function of the pneumatic test panel to verify operation of the emergency shutdown valve. The results are improved system performance and valve diagnostic capability along with a reduction in testing time and initial investment cost.

  • Partial stroke testing – This test checks for valve movement without fully stroking the valve. Many applications will allow 10% movements to verify valve response without upsetting the critical process line. Diagnostic data is collected and an alert is given if the valve is stuck.
  • Step response test – This test analyzes overshoot, hysteresis, dead time, and stroking time.
  • Valve signature test – This test can be used to benchmark valve performance by identifying friction, spring rate, seating forces and bench set.

Automatic testing – A scheduling and batch running tool within ValveLink Software can be used to automate multiple diagnostic tests.
